چکیده

Cursive script has many ambiguities. Feature extraction, by locating some specific characteristics of a writing sample in isolation or in combination with other features, can minimise the effect of these ambiguities. There are many features that can be extracted from any given sample. Information about the expected vertical letter position within the word, the zoning information, is envisaged to be a powerful criterion. This paper presents the results of experiments carried out to evaluate the usefulness of zoning information. The influence of the applied zoning criteria was varied and the results were observed. A discussion of the way the zoning information can be used to improve the recognition rate and the way in which an existing recognizer is modified to make use of this information is presented.

Offline Handwritten MODI Character Recognition Using HU, Zernike Moments and Zoning

HOCR is abbreviated as Handwritten Optical Character Recognition. HOCR is a process of recognition of different handwritten characters from a digital image of documents. Handwritten automatic character recognition has attracted many researchers all over the world to contribute handwritten character recognition domain. Shape identification and feature extraction is very important part of any cha...

Feature Extraction Using Zernike Moments

Shape identification and feature extraction are the main concern of any pattern recognition system. Object parameters are mostly dependent on spatio-temporal relationships among the pixels. However feature extraction is a complex phenomenon which needs to be addressed from the invariance property, irrespective of position and orientation. Zernike moments are used as shape descriptors and identi...

Cursive script recognition by backward matching

This paper proposes a new model for cursive script recognition which is both analytical and global and emphasizes the role of high-level contextual information. This model is based both on a top-down recognition scheme called Backward Matching and a bottom-up feature extraction process which are working in a competitive way. The top-down recognition scheme allows multi-level correspondence betw...

Integration of Contextual Information in Handwriting Recognition Systems

This paper investigates different strategies allowing integration of contextual information during the feature extraction stage of a cursive handwriting HMM-based recognition system. First we propose to use linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in order to integrate the class information during feature set building. Secondly several zoning strategies are used to integrate local contextual informat...

Cursive Script Recognition : A Sentence Level Recognition

We describe the cursive script recognition module of a cheque processing system currently under development at the Centre for Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence (CENPARMI). Common systems perform recognition either on a character by character basis, or on a word level. The present study investigates the recognition at a higher level of abstraction, at the sentence level. Our computati...
